Meet the Newport Beach Team Behind Mainspring Garage Door Co.

We’ve been the crew answering calls and knocking on doors in Newport Beach since 1984. What keeps us showing up is simple: we like fixing things properly the first time, and we don’t like leaving a homeowner stuck. Every person here is background-checked, uniformed, and trained under our K.E.Y.S. code. We’re local people who happen to know garage doors inside and out.

Our People

Carl Dutton, Owner

I started Mainspring Garage Door Co. in 1984, naming it for the torsion spring that carries a door’s full weight - the part most people never notice until it snaps. After four decades in Newport Beach, I’ve seen what salt air does to bottom brackets, how morning fog swells wooden panels in Corona del Mar, and why a spring that should last 10,000 cycles fails in six years near the water. I still answer the phone myself some nights, and I still drive out when a job goes sideways. My rule: the price we quote is the price on the bill. No surprises. I put that in writing on every job, along with our 90-Day Done Right Promise.

Mike R., Lead Technician

Mike joined us in 2017 after ten years running his own small shop in Costa Mesa. He’s the person we send when a door has baffled two other companies. Mike holds a journeyman certification in overhead door systems and specializes in torsion spring conversions - swapping out the old extension spring setups we still find in Balboa Island cottages. He’s factory-familiar with every brand we service, from LiftMaster openers to Wayne Dalton torqueMaster systems. Off the clock, Mike restores vintage motorcycles and applies the same patience to a 1972 Honda that he does to a seized drum assembly. Homeowners in Newport Coast request him by name.

Sandra T., Senior Installer

Sandra came to us in 2019 with a background in commercial construction, and she brought a rigor we didn’t know we needed. She handles our full-door replacements and new installations, from measuring a custom Clopay Reserve Wood door in Harbor View Hills to fitting an Amarr Classica on a tight Lido Isle garage. Sandra is certified in wind-load installation, which matters more than people realize when Santa Ana winds hit. She keeps a notebook of every job’s quirks - the garage in Eastbluff with the header that was never level, the San Joaquin Hills home where the concrete was poured thin in 1986. She’ll tell you straight if your opening needs framing work before a door goes in. Sandra’s son just started high school, and she’s already warned him not to touch a torsion spring.

Derek L., Service Coordinator

Derek answers the phones, schedules the calls, and makes sure our trucks leave the shop stocked with the right springs and openers for the day’s route. He’s been with Mainspring since 2021, and he’s the live person you reach at 11 p.m. on a Sunday when your door won’t close. Derek grew up in Newport Beach, so when someone says they’re near the old Linda Isle bridge or down by the Balboa Pier, he knows the travel time to the minute. He tracks which technician has which parts on their truck, which is how we finish most jobs in a single visit. Derek’s detail that matters: he remembers repeat customers’ names without a prompt, and he checks in the day after every repair to make sure it’s holding.

Jesse K., Apprentice Technician

Jesse started with us in 2023, fresh from a mechanical program at Orange Coast College. He’s working his way through our training ladder under Mike’s supervision - starting with cable and roller replacements, moving into opener diagnostics, and eventually torsion spring work. Jesse’s already factory-trained on Chamberlain and Genie systems, and he’s the one who figured out why a smart opener in Newport Coast kept dropping its Wi-Fi signal (the homeowner’s mesh network was fighting the opener’s frequency). He’s from a family of contractors, so he grew up knowing that showing up on time matters more than talking fast. Jesse lives in Costa Mesa and surfs before dawn when the swell’s right. He checks tide charts the way he checks spring wire gauges: carefully.

One Standard, Every Job

Every person on this crew works under the same K.E.Y.S. code we established years ago: Krafted right, Every time, Your home first, Standing behind it. That means the 90-Day Done Right Promise applies whether Carl or Jesse signs the invoice. It means background checks and uniforms on every job, not most. It means we quote the flat price before we touch a tool, and we carry springs, cables, and openers on every truck so you’re not waiting on parts. We’ve been in Newport Beach long enough to know that a reputation is built one door at a time. We’re still here because we do what we say we’ll do, and we fix it if we don’t.
